Replacing the Church Hall
As you will be aware, St. Peters Church has recently taken the steps to place the Church Hall up for sale. The hall itself is now in a very dilapidated condition and has been deemed unsafe for public use in its current state. The cost of repairing and improving the hall to bring it up to standard is substantial, and as a result, various options have been considered.
Following a feasibility study and options appraisal, it was identified that the most suitable option would be to sell the existing Church Hall and create new facilities at the back of St. Peter’s Church with full disabled access.
The aim is to create a new flexible space which can be used by the community. A new mezzanine floor will be built across the back of the Church creating space on two floors. Upstairs, there will be a large function room and toilet facilities, with the existing gallery room above the vestry being converted into a kitchen area for catering purposes. The Church Office will be housed on the ground floor, along with storage space, a smaller meeting room, an exhibition area and disabled toilet facilities. Access to the first floor will be via a new staircase, with a platform lift in place to allow for disabled access. The area at the back of the church under the mezzanine floor will be used for exhibitions and overflow seating for larger church services. The meeting room on the ground floor will be fronted by a glass retractable door which, when not in use, will create this open area for the additional seating.
As part of the building work, the rendering of the West Wall will also be completed and a new glazed entrance lobby will be created giving a clearer view of the church when you enter through the front doors.
Whilst it is recognised that the new venue will need to be of a modern appearance to appeal to the wider community, the contemporary design proposed will give an ambience that will reflect the different sides of the church and the community. The strong identity of the Church and its historic features such as the chequered floor tiles between the pews, the elaborately painted timber ceiling and open gallery above the vestry will all be retained. The alterations will be of a subservient and traditional appearance with the new walls being kept solid and plain in keeping with the current structure of the building.
It is proposed that this new area at the back of St. Peters Church will provide increased meeting and community facilities in a prominent position in the centre of town, with affordable and cheaper hire charges, replacing the dilapidated Church Hall. The meeting rooms and community area will be made available to various groups and organisations to deliver activities and services to the wider community. The new exhibition area will display the history of both the Church and the local area and provide an information point for visitors, whilst local talented people will also have an opportunity of displaying their work and achievements.
Once the building work is complete, the Parochial Church Council intend to continue to work closely with the community to deliver a range of activities to encourage social interaction.
In essence, the re-ordering of the nave area at the back of St. Peters Church will enable the Parochial Church Council to re-build on the activities and services that were once delivered from the Church Hall, and work closely with the community to develop a range of new activities.
